Need a Lunchtime Get-A-Way? Before it gets too hot, take your lunch and get on out for a walk, some solitude and breathe a little fresh air and scenery in. Today, let’s take a walk through Dorothy B. Oven Park or Goodwood Museum & Gardens. You can find these beautiful parks tucked away in the heart of Tallahassee. As a Realtor in the Tallahassee area, and a history buff, I love visiting these parks in between appointments as well as sharing them with my customers!
Dorothy B. Oven is home of some of the city’s most beautiful camelias, my favorite plants. The park feature a home built in 1936 By Bill Rosa and his wife Dorothy B. It was designed by Alfred B. Maclay (for whom a State Park was named here in Tallahassee as well, Alfred B. Maclay State Park). Dorothy B. remarried, and when she passed away, William Oven, Jr. donated this 6 acre parcel of land to the City of Tallahassee and the Tallahassee Friends of Our Park Foundation. There are gazebos, walking paths, and the meeting house can be booked for special events as well. I love the pond and the area around the pond. If you are looking for tranquilty and reflection, look to Dorothy Bl Oven Park!
Goodwood Museum and Gardens is another great spot for lunch in Tallahassee, FL. The estate dates back to 1830! Imagine living in that time and how different Tallahassee would be! The story is that Senator William C. Hodges’s wife wanted a bed she saw at the Goodwood home, but in order to buy it, he bought the entire estate! Mrs. Margaret remarries after the Senators death and when she passed away in 1978, her husband Tom Hood, established a foundation in her memory. In 1990, upon his death, the foundation took over the plantation and museum. Today, the cottages that surround the house are available for rentals for meetings, weddings, social events and is an original antebellum museum, complete with original furnishings and decor. There’s a sandwich shop in the gardens, and a great spot for a lunch break!
Get out..breathe some fresh air and walk where history lives!
